About IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.IELTS is accepted by over 11,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional associations, and immigration authorities in countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA.

Test Types

IELTS offers two main test types:

  1. IELTS Academic: Designed for those applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
  2. IELTS General Training: Suitable for those migrating to Australia, Canada, and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs, and work experience in an English-speaking environment.

Both test types assess the four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both Academic and General Training tests.

Test Format
  • The total test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between.
  • The Speaking section may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other sections.
  • Test takers can choose to take the test on paper or computer, depending on availability at their local test center.
Scoring
  • IELTS uses a 9-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band 1) to expert user (band 9).
  • Half bands (e.g., 6.5) are also awarded.
  • An overall band score is calculated by taking the average of the four section scores.
Preparation
  • IELTS provides a range of official preparation materials, including practice tests, to help test takers familiarize themselves with the format and content of the test.
  • Many test centers and online platforms also offer additional preparation resources and practice tests.
Conclusion

IELTS is a globally recognized English language proficiency test that assesses the four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. With two test types available and a focus on real-world communication skills, IELTS is suitable for those seeking to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country.
